Free Piano Sheets for Beginners
Start playing real tunes in your first week. Each beginner piano sheet shows the melody two ways — as easy letter notes and on a simple treble staff with the note names under every note — and the on-screen keyboard plays the song and lights up each key so you can follow along. All the songs are traditional or public-domain melodies, in C position for the right hand.

Finding C position
Find middle C: it is the white key just to the left of the pair of two black keys nearest the middle of the keyboard (or under the brand name). Put your right thumb (finger 1) on middle C, and let fingers 2, 3, 4 and 5 rest on D, E, F and G. This “C position” lets you play most of these songs without moving your hand. Twinkle and Frère Jacques reach A with the fifth finger stretching one key, and Frère Jacques dips down to the G below middle C.
Reading the letter notes
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| C | One beat (quarter note) |
| C- | Two beats (half note) |
| C--- | Four beats (whole note) |
| C. | One and a half beats (dotted quarter) |
| C' | Half a beat (eighth note) |
Letter notes are a quick way to start, but the staff shows the same tune with rhythm and pitch at a glance. The sheets put both side by side so you can gradually rely on the staff.
Reading the staff
- The five lines of the treble staff, from bottom to top, are E, G, B, D and F — “Every Good Boy Does Fine”.
- The four spaces spell F, A, C, E.
- Middle C sits on a short extra line (a ledger line) just below the staff.
- Filled noteheads with stems are quarter notes; hollow ones with stems are half notes; hollow without a stem are whole notes.
- A flag on the stem makes an eighth note — two of them fit in one beat.
- Vertical bar lines divide the music into measures of four beats.
How to practise each song
- Listen: press Play and follow the lit keys.
- Clap and count the rhythm: “1, 2, 3, 4”.
- Play the right hand slowly at a low tempo, saying the note names.
- Repeat each line until it is smooth, then join the lines.
- Raise the tempo gradually.
- When it feels easy, try playing from the staff without looking at the letters.
Worked example
A beginner chooses Hot Cross Buns. They place fingers 1, 2 and 3 on C, D and E, press Play at 70 beats per minute and watch E, D, C light up. They clap the third line — eight quick C’s and D’s — then play it slowly. By the end of the first practice they can play the whole tune from the letter notes, and the next day they follow the staff instead.
What the printable pack contains
The template pack includes each song on its own sheet with letter notes and staff notation, a large-print version without note names for reading practice, a keyboard map with finger numbers, a note-reading worksheet and a practice log.
Tips for adult beginners and children
- Short daily practice (10–15 minutes) works better than one long session.
- Keep a curved hand shape, as if holding a ball.
- Use a metronome or the tempo slider to keep a steady beat.
- Sing along — it helps you feel the rhythm.
- Celebrate finishing each song; it builds motivation.
